“Community” is an apt word to describe the Dr. George Show. The show draws cars of all types mostly from the surrounding communities in the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs to Indio), Morongo Basin (Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree) and the Inland Empire. The biggest share of the spectators come from the above communities to visit the event each year on the second Saturday of February. Advertisers and sponsors from these communities also support the event. Most significantly the Dr. George Show, presented by the Palm Springs Cruising Association (“PSCA”) has contributed back to the community by presenting checks each year as large as $50,000 to the Desert Cancer Foundation after the Show.
This year marked the 11th Annual Dr. George Show and was held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, CA. The show is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Sebastian George, a nationally prominent oncologist and co-founder of the Desert Cancer Foundation. Dr. George often helped patients who could not afford to pay. Dr. George died in a traffic accident in 2002. The show is a tribute to Dr. George and the proceeds are donated to the Desert Cancer Foundation.
For an additional $10 pre-registered cars could pick out and reserve a parking spot and check in at the Tennis Garden on Friday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Cars could be left at the Tennis Garden overnight under the watchful eyes of PSCA members. On Saturday the gates opened at 7:30 a.m. and the show started at 9:00 a.m. The cars were parked on beautiful green grass which kept the dust down and offered a perfect place for a picnic. The members of PSCA have mastered the art of parking of cars. Each parking spot on the grass was marked with pre-drawn calk lines and PSCA kept the cars moving and directed into the spots — no back-ups, no delays. It took less than 5 minutes from the time a car turned off the city streets until it was parked.
Riverside County Fire Department was on hand with it’s ladder truck. Milford kindly climbed to the top of the ladder to take the over-view photo for us. The department brought along it’s newest recruit to drive the truck. His name is Liam.
Around 800 cars and 6,000 plus spectators filled the Tennis Garden, along with dozens of vendors. The Dr. George Show is open to most every type of vehicle. On display were hot rods, customs, muscle cars, scooters, trucks, rat rods, and even a Tesla electric car.
Below are a few of the nice cars at the show.
Looking at all the great vehicles makes for an interesting day. The award ceremony started at 3:00 p.m. and the show was over around 4:00 p.m. This show is a great way to spend a warm sunny day in the desert.
One really nice car at the show was a 1954 Chevrolet convertible owned by Mike Swanson of Yorba Linda. We particularly like the dash which was taken from a 1955 Chevy.
A lot of very nice cars paraded through the awards ceremony.
Here are a few.
PSCA does a fantastic job putting on this show. Every aspect of the day is planned and efficiently executed – registration, picking up goody bags, looking at the cars, accessing the vendors, resting at a picnic table to enjoy a beer, watching the award ceremony and finally leaving the facility. It all works with no hazards and no hicups. Good Job!
