The 21st Annual Dr. George CHARITY CAR SHOW was held on February 10, 2024 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Indian Wells, CA. There were 1,100 pre-registered vehicles and many vendors in the Tennis Garden. At 9:00 a.m. the gates opened to allow spectator entrance and thousands of people were added to the Tennis Garden. After all the rain during the month of February, nice weather for the week-end seemed iffy, but on Saturday the sky was blue and the sun was shining. As always, the Dr. George Show attracts some of the very best and most unique vehicles. The show kicked off with singing of the National Anthem and presentation of the colors by Marines from the Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command and Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms. After that the music started and was provided by the Flash Back Boyz. Bob Beck was on hand to serve as announcer and kept everyone posted about the day’s happenings, including the annual pedal car races. The cars were lined up for review prior to the racing. But once the racers took to the track the racing was non-stop. The racers were very focused on the job at hand. Once the pushers got the cars started it was up to the drivers to finish the job. While they couldn’t all win, they all had fun. All the racers took home a trophy, but the winner got the big one. The pedal car races have become an annual event and a good fundraiser. Once the races are over the kids surrender their race cars which are then auctioned off. Renowned pinstriper Von Hot Rod served as auctioneer. Not all the pedal car action was on the track, however. Ale brought her own pedal cars – maybe she’s getting in shape for next year’s pedal car races. While Ale liked her fire engine, she was partial to her lowrider. She no doubt got that preference from her uncle Alexis Avila who took home the Best of Show Lowrider trophy. One very notable car at the show was the 1936 Ford Roadster owned and built by Danny Hale. Danny worked as a body and fender man throughout his career and he is very good at it. This remarkable car started as a coupe and was a roadster by the time Danny was done. To accomplish this transformation and keep the body proportions, Danny shortened the frame. This car was a contender for America’s Most Beautiful Roadster at the Grand National Roadster Show in 2023. Below is a photo of Danny with his Best of Show trophy. Well Done! Two AA/FD Nostalgia Top Fuel Dragsters were on hand and fired up twice creating a crowd pleasing cackle fest. Throughout the day, raffle tickets were being sold and there were silent auctions. All of the funds raised by the show and it’s many activities go to benefit the Desert Cancer Foundation. The show takes its name from Dr. Sebastian George, co-founder of the Desert Cancer Foundation. Dr. George was a local oncologist and was known for helping those battling cancer, even if they were unable to pay. There was plenty of time to walk around the Tennis Garden and see all the cars and trucks on display – and there were some nice ones. There were also cars with a story. This 1956 Ford pick-up shown below belongs to Don Freymiller. Don’s son built this truck for him for his 80th birthday. What a gift and it took home a trophy. Don is very fortunate to have such a caring son and such an outstanding pickup. Some cars, like Todd Frazier’s 1955 Chevrolet, 2-door post, is painted to remind him of his career in the Navy. The light gray is the color of the hull of the troop transport ship he served on, the dark gray is the color of the deck of the ship and the red stripe is the color of the Captain’s gig (a 30′ power launch for the Captain’s use). A great car and a trophy winner. And one car served as a memorial to Nick Nigosian, a member of the Palm Springs Cruisin’ Association and a friend of the owner of this car. The Tennis Garden has room to show 1100 cars and the Dr. George Show fills the Tennis Garden every year. This show is so popular attendance is sold out by pre-registration only. Today (Friday) provided a hint of what tomorrow will hold. On Friday attendees can obtain reserved parking by going to the Tennis Garden, obtaining a stake with a name tag on it from the registration desk, and pounding the stake into an available parking spot. NEW: MANY CAR PHOTOS HAVE BEEN ADDED BELOW THE PEDAL CAR RACES. THE DR. GEORGE SHOW 2019 was held on Feb. 9 in the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Indian Wells, CA. This was the 17th Annual Dr. George Show and about 1,000 cars filled the Tennis Garden. Click on the SmugMug icon: THE FIRST ANNUAL DR. GEORGE SHOW PEDAL CAR RACES: A determined group of 12 racers took to the lanes at the Dr. George Show on Saturday. The racers were divided into two groups of six which raced to the finish line. The top three racers in each round went on to the final round – only one could be victorious. Ford racing legend Allen Grant dropped the green flag and they were off. The Tom’s Garage car was a winner in the first round. The AAA car crossed the finish line first in the final round to take the overall win. After the race all the cars gathered for the awards ceremony and post-race interviews. Again this year after presentation of the U.S. Flag by the Color Guard from the Twentynine Palms Marine Base, the Palm Springs Air Museum did a fly over with a C47-Dakota. THE CARS : Lindsay, Julie and David were taking in the sights when they stopped to look at this 1959 El Camino. Bob Beck hosted Mecum Auction Commentator John Kraman in a car talk; and, also hosted another Car Talk with Peter Brock, designer of the 1963 Corvette and the Shelby Daytona Coupe, Allen Grant, former Shelby Employee and Driver of a World Champion Daytona and Jim McGee, F-1 & Indy Car Hall of Fame Crew Chief. However, the cars were the Show and there were some spectacular cars in the Tennis Garden. Besides cars there were motorcycles: And rat rods: and more cars: And of course the unusual: And Volkswagens: And more cars: And of course the Dr. George Show includes fire trucks. The Dr. George Show, however, is about more than the cars. This event was started to honor Dr. Sebastian George a nationally prominent oncologist and co-founder of the Desert Cancer Foundation (DCF). Dr. George was killed in a traffic accident in 2002. The proceeds from this event go to the DCF to enable it to help cancer patients pay for their treatments when they lack funds to do so. Since its inception, the Dr. George show has raised over $847,000 for the DCF. The 18th Dr. George Show will be held February 8, 2020. See our SmugMug site for photos available for purchase. Click on the SmugMug icon: _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Dr. George Show, which officially starts on Saturday Feb. 9, opened it’s gates today (Friday) to allow cars with reserved parking to enter. A mini-car show resulted from the cars that were being left overnight giving an advance look at some of the spectacular cars that will be in the show. Registration for the show, which is limited to 1,000 cars, is sold out. Tomorrow promises to be an eye-catching event. The venue for the event is the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Below is a sneak peak at the 2019 Dr. George Show: There are numerous activities planned for tomorrow including a race. Twelve beautifully painted vehicles will face off and race for the trophy – and we’ll cover the action. That’s right – pedal cars. The drivers will be little tykes but none-the-less determined to be victorious. We always knew that the Dr. George Show attracted cars from both the U.S. and Canada – but now it seems the show’s reach covers all of the Americas. This license plate was affixed to a very unique rat rod. We’ll have more coverage of the event posted on Monday night including the award winners. This year the awards include three Best of Show winners – one in the category Young Guns (for owners under 30), one in the category specialty cars, and one overall show winner.

The 16th Annual Dr. George Show, Indian Wells, CA Feb. 10, 2018. This show is sponsored by the Palm Spring Cruisin’ Association (PSCA) to benefit the Desert Cancer Foundation. Last year PSCA was able to donate $82,000 to the Foundation. These funds will help make it possible for a lot of folks to get the care and treatment they need. No matter your taste in vehicles, you’ll find it at The Dr. George Show. From the new: To the old: The shiny: The not-so-shiny: Perhaps the toughest truck ever built: We’ve heard of skeletons in the closet – but skeletons in the grille? In addition to the 1,000 vehicles at the show there were other things going on including Car Talk hosted by Bob Beck with Overhaulin’ crew and friends, Andreas Somogyi. Bob Beck also hosted a Car Talk with Peter Brock, famed designer of the 1963 Corvette and the Shelby Daytona Coupe, Alan Grant, former Shelby employee and driver of a world champion Daytona Coupe, and Jim McGee, Formula 1 and Indy Car Hall of Fame Crew Chief. From left to right are Brock, Grant and McGee. Below is Jim McGee’s Model A – the license plate reads “1 Indy 4X”. This Cobra is owned by Alan Grant. This nifty panel, outfitted with drawers patterned after a Helms Bakery truck, was used to sell donuts for a donation to benefit veterans. (Yum – good donuts). And speaking of veterans – the Palm Springs Air Museum did a flyover with the C-47 Skytrain military transport which was used by the U.S. Army Air Force and the U.S. Navy during World War II. A group of students from Santa Ynez High School brought a dirt track racer they built and raced. These students also race autocross at the Camarillo Airport. Abraham, below, will be driving the autocross car. The students will be hosting The 5th Annual Pirate Garage Car Show on March 17, 2018 at the Santa Ynez High School. A lot of future car enthusiasts were taking in the sights and Emery (left) and Abigail were amongst the cutest. Vic Slick was on hand and kept the music playing all day. When The Wanderer by Dion was played, these two couldn’t help but dance. This 1956 Chevrolet Nomad was Best of Show. An outstanding and rare Hupmobile was selected as Best of Show Specialty Car. This motorcycle had a fantastic and unique Biblical themed paint job: This race car was part of the exhibit of the Jim McGee and Alan Grant cars. However, this year an additional 48 exceptional cars took home a trophy. The 13th ANNUAL DR. GEORGE SHOW

The 13th Annual Dr. George Show, February 14, 2014, Indian Wells, CA. For the Dr. George Show, 13 was the lucky number. The stars were aligned – the weather was perfect with bright sunlight, blue sky, and warm temperatures, the grass was green and lush for the parking, gas was cheap, and an unprecedented 986 cars gathered in the Tennis Garden in Indian Wells. Not only did the number of show cars increase this year, but it appeared that the spectator numbers exceeded the 10,000 spectators at the event last year. Brian Grimes climbed about 60 feet up the ladder of a vintage fire truck to take this photo. The truck is a ’75 Crown ladder originally from Redlands and is from the Fire Memories Museum located in Banning, CA. As in past years, the folks in the Palm Springs Cruisin’ Association demonstrated that they are experts when it comes to hosting a car show. Everything went smoothly from 7:30 a.m. when the gates opened to allow the show cars to enter until about 4:00 p.m. when the last award was handed out. Every type of car was on display: customs, hot rods, rat rods, classics, barn finds, special interest, tri-five’s, trucks, exotics, motorcycles and vintage fire trucks. The slide show below shows some of the cars at the Dr. George Show and many more can be seen on our SmugMug site [timingtower SmugMug] In addition to looking at cars and visiting with friends, old and new, there were a lot of vendors offering everything from kettle corn to car covers. There were several choices for lunch depending on what you were in the mood for – bar-b-que, pulled pork, brats and, of course, the beer booth was popular. Taking a family ‘selfie’ was part of the fun. The occupants of some cars were pretty unusual. Tickets for a 50/50 drawing were sold throughout the day. The winning ticket was held by Del Gagnon and he took home $1,087. Below is a photo of the lucky winner. The award ceremony started at 3:00 p.m. and 40 truly beautiful cars formed the “winners” line. A look at the overview photo at the top of the page, gives an idea of how hard it was for the judges to select the winners. The awards were handed out by Juliette George, the widow of Dr. Sebastian George, as one-by-one the cars paraded by. The last award, Best of Show, went to George and India Sepulveda and their ’48 Ford Woodie. Then it was over and it wasn’t long until the Tennis Garden was empty. The photo below shows George and India Sepulveda receiving the Best of Show award from Juliette George. A slideshow follows showing this spectacular 1948 Woodie from all angles. More award ceremony photos can be seen at timingtower SmugMug This show was started in 2003 to honor the memory of Dr. Sebastian George, co-founder of the Desert Cancer Foundation, who was killed in a car accident in 2002. The Desert Cancer Foundation provides medical services for cancer patients as well as cancer screening. Over the years, The Dr. George Show has raised $600,000 for the Desert Cancer Foundation. Because many of the doctors in the Coachella Valley provide services to Desert Cancer Foundation patients at a discount, that $600,000 has provided more than $4,000,000 in services. Last year the Dr. George Show raised $55,000 for the Desert Cancer Foundation and this year is sure to top that. Over the past 13 years, the Dr. George Show has grown into one of the premier shows in Southern California. Watch for the date for next year.
