GEORGE SHOW, Saturday, February 8, 2020, Tennis Garden, Indian Wells, CA   This Pontiac Firebird ‘Bandit’ car won the Young Guns trophy.   A ’53 highly customized Kaiser won best of show. The other award winners are below.             The photos above can be seen on our SmugMug site and are available for purchase.   Click on the SmugMug icon:        Today’s automotive enthusiasts have come to embrace more variety in car shows.  The Dr. George Show has been one of the few shows to take full advantage of this trend.  The Dr. George Show has no limitations on make or vintage of entries and as a result the Show has continually grown to become hugely successful.  This year – the 18th Annual Dr. George Show welcomed cars from late model Corvettes, to movie cars, to 30’s coach-built cars and nearly everything in between.   The Dr. George Show is one of the few where you can see a rat rod in the awards ceremony line.  This rat rod was an award winner and offered the owner’s commentary on the “baby on board” sticker.   Another plus for The Dr. George Show is that it is a charity event.  Proceeds from the Show goes to the Desert Cancer Foundation.  The Show takes it’s name from Dr. Sebastian George, a local oncologist and co-founder of the Desert Cancer Foundation, who died in an automobile accident.  After this year’s Show, the Palm Springs Cruisin’ Association will have given over $1 million to the Desert Cancer Foundation.  Folks at the show are pleased to contribute to these good works.   The show opened with the posting of the colors by the U.S. Marines from the the Marine base in Twentynine Palms and the National Anthem was performed by Alisha Bates.   The Dr. George Show includes numerous activities – in fact with almost 1,100 cars to look at – it’s nearly impossible to take in all of the activities available.  Again this year, Bob Beck hosted Car Talk with Peter Brock (the designer of the ’63 Vette and the Shelby Daytona Coupe), Allen Grant (Former Shelby employee and driver of the World Champion Daytona) and Jim McGee (Hall of Fame Indy Crew Chief).   When Jim McGee wasn’t enlightening an audience with stories of his past glories, he was making a few laps in the Pennzoil Bumper Car.     For the first time this year, Tate Auctions held a car auction during the Show.  There were about 25 vehicles available to be auctioned off.  These vehicles included hot rods, newer cars, a 30’s luxury car, even a customized motorcycle. This customized motorcycle is a 1983 Honda complete with a side-car.  It was one of the vehicles being auctioned off by Tate Auctions.   Another activity offered was fire-ups of two nostalgia dragsters. The dragster on the left was driven by Tommy Ivo.   In the late 50’s Ivo drove this dragster with its Buick engine to a World ET record.  On the right is the Bivens & Fisher Checkmate top fuel dragster, a  nitro car drive by Jerry Bevins in the 60’s.     On hand were the stars of the current movie Ford vs. Ferrari,  which are shown above.  The movie told the story of Ford’s successful efforts to win the Le Mans auto race away from Ferrari.  The role of Carroll Shelby was played by Matt Damon and the part of Ken Miles was played by Christian Bale.   One activity that started at last year’s show, and returned again this year, is the pedal car racing.  If you haven’t seen 10 three and four year-old kids race pedal cars, you’ve missed something pretty exciting.   After Mom gives a little encouragement, the kids are ready to race.   The first lap of the pedal car race is underway and these kids had a great time.  Lined up behind the cars and drivers are the pedal car crews which are necessary to give a push start to each car.       After the trophies were presented, the winner took a victory lap in the Pennzoil Bumper Car with Jim McGee.   All of the kids, drivers and crew, received one of these ‘gold’ medallions.  After the race was over, Tate Auctions auctioned off four of the pedal cars.  The money raised will go 50% to the YMCA and 50% to the Desert Cancer Foundation.   This is Leo.  His Dad said we could take his picture if we could get him to stand still.  We couldn’t but were lucky to get the photo while he was on the move.   This is a photo of Florence and her big brother Hugo – he’s five – posing in front of their favorite car.   Bodie was sitting still in the shade and made for a perfect model.   Throughout all of these goings on – folks had to make time to see the cars – and there were plenty to see. The car above is a recreation of the Eleanor car from the movie Gone in 60 Seconds.     >The photos above can be seen our SmugMug site and are available for purchase.   Click on the SmugMug icon:            SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2020 Dr. George Show, Tennis Garden, Indian Wells, CA Today the Tennis Garden was full – about 1,100 cars, many exhibition cars, food and merchandise vendors, and many, many spectators.  It was quite a day. The showed ended with the awards ceremony.  Below is a photo of the Best of Show.  This car created from a 1954 Kaiser is named VooDoo Sahara.  There will be more about this car in our Monday evening post.     The award winning cars lined up waiting for the awards ceremony. Below are photos of a few cars at the show and there will be many more posted on Monday evening when we get home. There will be more photos and an article […]

MORONGO BASIN CAR CLUB – ROAD RUNNERS 21ST ANNUAL CHARITY CAR SHOW https://www.timingtower.com/morongo-basin-car-club-road-runners-21st-annual-charity-car-show/ https://www.timingtower.com/morongo-basin-car-club-road-runners-21st-annual-charity-car-show/#respond Tue, 27 Sep 2016 06:14:31 +0000 http://www.timingtower.com/?p=6010 The Morongo Basin Car Club – Road Runners held its 21st Annual Charity Car Show on September 24, 2016 at the Town Center Mall in Yucca Valley, CA. The Big Morongo Basin Car Club, the Road Runners’ 21st Annual Charity Car show epitomized the trend in cars shows today.  It was inclusive – everybody was welcome -whether you came in a hot rod, a classic, a motorcycle, a rat rod, a modern vehicle, a bicycle, a roadster, a pick-up truck or an 18 wheeler – whether it was a Ford, a Chevy, a Dodge, a Cobra, a Corvette, a Plymouth – your attendance was appreciated. This atmosphere made for a very fun car show for both spectators and participants.  Below are some of the nice cars at the show.   Some of the kids posed next to their favorite car.  Below is Isaac and this is Maddie.  Two kids with excellent taste. The proceeds from the show went to Soldiers Organized Services (SOS) and Center for Healthy Generations.  SOS was formed by Erica Stone to provide transportation to and from the 29 Palms Marine Base and the Palm Springs and Ontario Airports at no charge to active duty service members and their families.  The Center for Healthy Generations, located in Yucca Valley, provides all generations of the community with exercise, activities and information. The Center offers a wide variety of activities and classes for all ages: including classes in land based-exercise, aquatics, computer, dog training, bridge, knitting, and water color.  Both of these charities provide valuable services to the local community. Saturday was Erica Stone’s birthday and she posed with Norm Correll, President of the Morongo Basin Car Club, while the DJ sang happy birthday to her. The gates opened at 7:00 a.m. and the show started at 9:00 a.m. and during that time the Yucca Valley Fire Department served breakfast. The award ceremonies got underway at about 2:30 p.m. and by 3:00 p.m. it was over. The weather couldn’t have been better – a typical high-desert fall day – temperature about 85° with plenty of sunshine and bright blue sky. The show was well attended with about 125 vehicles.  There were several vendors selling everything from hats to nostalgic signs.  The Marines had a booth as did CERT (Community Emergency Response Team).  The High Desert Marines were raffling off a high point 9mm rifle and an M1 rifle to benefit veterans.   There was also some good food available – hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, kettle corn….   The California Highway Patrol had a booth and Officer Chipper did a meet and greet with the crowd.   All of the show vehicles came with an owner who was more than happy to spend time talking about his/her pride and joy and every car was one that you wanted to stop and look at.  Several one of a kind creations were on display:  a ’64 Plymouth Valiant pick-up truck, a vehicle Plymouth never made, a stretched and customized bicycle, a big rig tractor with custom paint – Kawasaki Green, and a cut-down dodge truck painted army green. Raffle tickets were drawn all day and a lot of prizes were given away.  There was also a 50/50 drawing that provided a BIG payout. Thirty trophies were given out including: Mayor’s’ Choice, People’s Choice, Best Rat Rod, Best Motorcycle and  Best of Show.  Additionally trophies were given to 20 of the most outstanding vehicles at the show.  The Best of Show trophy went to Dave and Fran Jones of Lucerne Valley for their ’56 Nomad.  This red and white Nomad, shown below, was truly outstanding and deserved this title.   Below are photos of some of the award winners.  Photos of all the award winners can be seen on our SmugMug site and are available for purchase. There were a lot of fine cars at the show and not all are shown here.  More can be seen on our SmugMug site. More photos from the awards ceremony are on our SmugMug site as well as all the photos shown above and more.  All photos are available for purchase. It’s over for this year and to the members of the Morongo Basin Car Club we say GOOD JOB!  We are looking forward to the 22nd Annual show and will put the date on our calendar when it is announced.

THE 40TH ANNUAL FORTY FORD DAY, JUNE 26, 2016 LA PALMA PARK, ANAHEIM, CA https://www.timingtower.com/forty-ford-day-june-26-2016-la-palma-park-anaheim-ca/ https://www.timingtower.com/forty-ford-day-june-26-2016-la-palma-park-anaheim-ca/#respond Sun, 26 Jun 2016 01:11:13 +0000 http://www.timingtower.com/?p=5807 The 40th Annual Forty Ford Day held in LaPalma Park, in Anaheim, CA on June 26, 2016 was a great show – like the 39 others before it.  The forty with its classic good looks has become one of Ford’s most iconic cars – just looking at the ’40 Coupe in the photo above you can see why.  This year 260 cars sat on the grass and under the trees in LaPalma Park.  It was a perfect day for a car show – mother nature cooperated and the temperatures were in the high 80’s – 10 degrees lower than predicted. There were a lot of exceptional cars, including this nicely customized ’55 Chevy Nomad shown above. Each year Forties Limited (the show host) offers a bar-b-que lunch with hamburgers, hot dogs and everything else to create a fine picnic lunch.  Club members set up the grill in the shade and kept cooking until everyone was fed. The line moved through quickly and a lot of lunches were served. There was a 50/50 raffle with 50% of the proceeds going to the City of Hope.  Three auction-style opportunity drawings were held.  Those who purchased tickets dropped them in a can next to the item he/she wanted to win.  There were a lot of items to win. Again this year, Thumper did an fine job of filling the air with rock and roll. A little after 1:00 p.m. the award winning cars began to line up for the award ceremony.  The trophies are individually made by members of Forties Limited and this year 20 trophies were presented including, for the first time “Best of Show”.  The judges no doubt had a tough time because each one of the 260 cars in attendance was capable of taking home a trophy.  Matt (below) is doing an admirable job of minding the trophy table. Below are a few more of the nice cars in the Park.       Ron Houk of Yorba Linda, CA brought a number of antique Whizzers and bicycles, many of which were in amazing original condition.  The Whizzers had a 3-1/2 hp motor and whizzed along at about 25 mph.   Below are a couple slideshows of  photos of the winners. These winners’ photos are on our SmugMug site and are for sale.  Click on the SmugMug logo below:      If you have any questions, e-mail us at timingtower@gmail.com.   These winners’ photos are on our SmugMug site and are for sale. Click on the SmugMug logo below:   This terrific Merc (with suicide doors no less) took home the Best of Show trophy. After the last trophy was handed out cars began leaving the Park and Forty Ford Day was over for another year.     More photos from the award ceremony are on our SmugMug site as well as all the photos shown above and more.

9th Annual Route 62 Cruisers Car Show https://www.timingtower.com/9th-annual-route-62-cruisers-car-show/ https://www.timingtower.com/9th-annual-route-62-cruisers-car-show/#respond Tue, 24 May 2016 19:22:14 +0000 http://www.timingtower.com/?p=5745 ROUTE 62 CRUISERS 9TH ANNUAL CAR SHOW, YUCCA VALLEY, CA, May 21, 2016   As visitors to Joshua Tree National Park drove along Highway 62 last Saturday they no doubt were startled when the usual tan and brown landscape transformed into a kaleidoscope of color as they passed the parking lot of  the Tractor Supply store where about 100 cars were gathered for the 9th Annual Route 62 Cruisers Car Show. This show offered something for everyone as it welcomed hot rods, motorcycles, rat rods, trucks, and tractors. All were present save for the tractors.   The show started with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the San Bernardino County Firemen.  While many were enjoying their pancakes the parking area began to fill. By 9:00 a.m. when the show opened to the public the parking area was nearly full. There were a number of vendors on hand to supply the necessary items for lunch – the hot dogs were particularly good, and the frozen lemonade hit the spot.  The High Desert Marines had a booth selling hats, etc. with the proceeds going to help the Veterans Home of California in Barstow, California. The weather was particularly cooperative.  Friday saw wind gusts of up to 36 mph in the high desert town of Yucca Valley, but by Saturday the winds went away and the sky was its usual bright blue; with temperatures in the low 70’s, it was a perfect day for a car show. There were a lot of unique and interesting cars to look at.  One was a 1930 Buick rat rod which took the best rat rod trophy. Another was a super comp rear-engine dragster which races in the NHRA Pacific Division. With its cat-eye tail lights and swooping fins, this 1959 Chevy station wagon attracted a lot of attention. This future hot rodder found her favorite car. Karl Krone is the owner of the 1958 BSA Thunderbolt motorcycle with a side car shown below.  The occupant of the sidecar is Karl’s grandson, Jessy.  Karl didn’t enter the motorcycle in the show, but came as a spectator.  However, this motorcycle has history.  The Thunderbolt was given to Karl by the owner of a motorcycle dealership for whom Karl had worked.  The Thunderbolt, along with the Watsonian Monaco sidecar was originally owned by Ken Cravin and his wife.  This duo rode the bike around the world in the late 1960’s.  This outfit has as much luggage space and leg room as an average 20000 cc sports car (of its time) and has a maximum speed of 72 mph in 3rd gear – 4th gear is considered an overdrive.  Karl says he and Jessy have had it up to 70 mph and it runs as “smooth as a whistle”. (We thank Jim Dunlap of Yucca Valley for providing us the information about this unique bike.) The members of the Route 62 Cruisers put on a great show. It was well organized and parking went smoothly. The proceeds of the show in part benefit the Wounded Warrior Program at the 29 Palms Marine Base; appropriate since the show was held on Armed Forces Day.  The 29 Palms Marine Base is located about 30 miles east of Yucca Valley and the men and women stationed there are a big part of the high desert communities. Raffle tickets were sold with ticket numbers drawn throughout the morning.  Some nice prizes were given away.  There was also a 50/50 drawing. Sounds Devine provided the music and kept the oldies playing all day. The awards ceremony started around 2:00 p.m.  Trophies were given for best car, truck, bike, rat rod, and under construction.  There was also a kids’ choice award and a best of show award.  The 1970 El Camino shown below with it’s proud owner was chosen best of show. Below are a few of the award winners – more winners can be seen on our SmugMug site.   All of the photos in this article, and more, are for sale and can be found  on our SmugMug site The Route 62 Cruisers will hold the 10th Annual Car Show on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Tractor Supply, Yucca Valley, CA.  We thoroughly enjoyed this show and it will be on our calendar for 2017.
