THE DR. GEORGE SHOW, INDIAN WELLS, CALIFORNIA

The 15th Annual Dr. George Show, February 11, 2017, Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Indian Wells, CA.

Indeed the grass is greener on the other side!!  In past years the Dr. George Show was held on the west side of the Tennis Garden facility.  This year it was held on the east side and after a very rainy California winter, vehicles were parked on spectacularly green grass surrounded by flowers in full bloom.  It was great not just for the show participants but for the spectators also.

The Dr. George Show is put on by the Palm Springs Cruisin’ Association and as always the show runs smoothly from the first car parked to the last car to leave.  The last couple of years, reserved parking has been available.  Those who sign up for reserved parking can either park and leave their car on Friday (the day before the show) or select a parking spot for Saturday.  By 4:00 p.m. Friday, a great many of the parking spots had either a car or a reserved sign in them.  This significantly eased entry into the show on Saturday.

By 9:00 a.m. on Saturday when the show opened to the public the Tennis Garden held about 960 vehicles and the spectators were pouring in.  Below are some of the great cars at the show:

One really unusual vehicle at the show was a 1949 GMC tractor towing a 1947 car hauler.

Proceeds from the Dr. George Show benefit the Desert Cancer Foundation, of which Dr. George was a co-founder.  Over the years PSCA has donated more than $750,000 to the Foundation which are used to offset the cost of cancer treatment for those in need in the Coachella Valley.  This show is not only a way to have a good time but to help others as well.  Everyone at the show was clearly having a good time.  Saturday was a typical winter day in the desert — the sun was bright and temperature was warm.  Perfect!!

Marli and Maci Garcia were at the show with their Dad and kindly agreed to pose for a photo.  In the not too distant future, these girls will want a hot rod of their own.

Several retired fire trucks were on hand, to raise the flag and provide the public a close look at the machines so essential to fighting fires.

A new feature was added to the show this year – Car Talk.  At 10:00 and at 1:00 NHRA announcer Bob Beck interviewed special guests who brought some special vehicles like the Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe below.

At 10:00 Andreas Somogyi and Ben Bright, both of whom were associated with the TV reality series, Overhaulin’ were interviewed – and yes, the subject vehicle is really overhauled in 7 days.

Forty-one trophies were given out this year, including a memorial award honoring Pete Chapouris.  Chapouris, who built many noteworthy cars over the years passed away on January 6, 2017.  Chapouris built the California Kid, a black ’34 3-window coupe with full-flames, and then co-founded Pete and Jake’s. At the time of his death Chapouris operated SoCal Speed Shop.  The ’33 Ford Coupe below is the winner of  “Pete’s Pick”.

The 15th Annual Dr. George Show will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017 in the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.  The show starts at 9:00 a.m. We’re told the show will be sold out again this year.  With about 900 hot rods, customs, motorcycles, classics and other specialty cars, it will be a great show for participants and spectators. The proceeds from this show benefit the Desert Cancer Foundation. Below is a photo of the best of show from 2016 Dr. George Show.  We’ll have an article and photos posted here on Monday evening.
