COUNTRY FAIR AND CAR SHOW

CITY OF BREA 34th ANNUAL COUNTRY FAIR AND CAR SHOW, July 4, 2013

untitledJuly 03, 2013-7

Long before the evening fireworks, spectators saw a dazzling display of bright colors as over 100 cars parked in the glistening sun at the Annual Brea Country Fair held on the 4th of July.  This year the Fair attracted about 110 really spectacular cars including hot rods, classics, muscle cars, rat rods, tri-five Chevys, and a lot of others – even a 1911 Indian motorcycle.  These cars filled the street at the lower edge of the park while another 10 antique cars were on display in the park along with a great old tractor.  The car show started at 10:00 a.m. but the parking was nearly full well before that time.

This nice 1957 Chevrolet (above) belongs to Bill Rice and Bill is the original owner of this fine car.  It came from the factory with a 283 ci engine and a powerglide transmission.  It now sports a 350 ci engine and a 350 turbo transmission.  Over the years this car has given Bill a lot of excitement – beyond just owning and driving an iconic car.  It was wrecked in the 1970’s and put back on the road with a 327 ci engine and a 350 turbo transmission — then it burned up when the carburetor flooded and the engine ignited the gas.  Pretty exciting when you are driving down the road and flames shoot out from the engine compartment.  After that the car sat for awhile until it went through a ground up restoration and hit the road again in 2000.  Bill said when the paint came off during the restoration, he found 2 bullets in the front fender.  Knowing the car hadn’t been shot while he was driving it, he figured the bullets came with the junk yard donor front end parts welded on after the wreck.

Bill has had this car licensed in his name for 53 years — for 3 years while it was sitting he didn’t license it.  He said the CA DMV told him his ’57 held the record for the longest registered car by a single owner in California.  We enjoyed talking to Bill and learning about this ’57 and hope Bill gets a little less excitement from the car in the future.

Here are a few more photos of Bill’s ’57:

Those who brought cars to the show were kept busy looking and talking cars, but there were a lot of other things going on – starting at 7:00 a.m. with a Pancake Breakfast put on by the Brea Kiwanis.  Throughout the day there were games like the target shoot sponsored by Boy Scout Troop 801, a cake walk offered by the Brea Museum Historical Club,  as well as a pie eating contest sponsored by the Brea Lions Club, and a ping pong toss hosted by Troop 707.  Of course there was an abundance of food available including hamburgers, hot dogs, tacos, a Korean Bar-b-que as well as cold drinks to help everyone cool off on a warm summer day.

Also at the Fair was a petting zoo brought by the students from the LaHabra High School Raider Ranch FFA which included 3 baby goats (3-5 months old), 2 lambs (1 year old) and a  heifer (3 months old).  The animals loved the attention showered on them and the kids were delighted with the animals. untitledJuly 03, 2013-111

Several groups provided entertainment during the day including Anthony Rivera and Raining Horseshoes singing country western, House Party with the Top 40, Latin and Classic Rock performed by Chico and the Wonderelles sang songs from the 50’s and 60’s.

And just to remind everyone what is being celebrated on the 4th of July,  Ben Franklin put in an appearance.  His appearance was a reminder of how this country got its start and the significance of the Declaration of Independence.
