It was so hazy and overcast the morning of the Antique Nationals, May 21, 2023, that you could barely see the San Gabriel Mountains in the distance. But by the time the race cars started heating up the track the sun burned through and it was a nice warm day for the 51st running of the Antique Nationals at Irwindale Speedway.
The event included both racing and a car show. The car show was for cars that were pre-1974 and included 150-200 cars, trucks, hot rods, kustoms, and vintage rage cars. The race was open to any 1959 or earlier vehicles and motorcycles.
As the event opened the racers lined up for tech inspection.
After going through tech inspection, as the drivers went to sign on the dotted line, the cars provided a perfect photo opportunity.
And then the racing began! Time trials were held during the morning session.
Only one Whizzer was on hand.
The staging lanes filled when eliminations got underway in the afternoon.
This Nash Metropolitan made an entertaining exhibition run.
There were some very nice and unique cars at the car show.
This is our choice for the best use of a non-standard part.
The Antique Nationals was a great way to spend a Sunday and we’re looking forward to next year when the 52nd Antique Nationals is held.
